As someone who's been a toxic asshole in fandom at one point, I agree. I get there's a lot of sensitive shit, especially if it ties in with real-life issues that might trigger real people... but I honestly don't care who you (general you) are or what you've been through. It's never acceptable to be abusive to anyone else, especially over fictional things. You're triggered? Step away from the computer until you calm down. Learn to write a response that gets your point across without being awful about it. Even if you think someone's being an idiot, you don't ever actually have to tell them. Seriously. Like... the world is not going to end if you're not "honest" about that.

One thing I don't like about this kind of discourse is the fact that it often sounds like "step away from the computer because this is not real and not worth fighting for, care more about the Real World !!" and uhh people online are as real as any really. And yes they are capable of lying just like people IRL are. To me being angry at dumb shit on a computer screen is just human really.

"and uhh people online are as real as any really"

Bots and false accounts aside (as they are different things), I think this idea is not given enough consideration in any online space.

Yes, people online are real. That's my point. Suggesting people step away from the computer is not to minimize their conflicts by saying the real world is more important (which, by the way, is something I never even said). My point is that it's not acceptable to verbally abuse anybody (or worse, doxxing or sending death threats) over something fictional.

Exactly, oh, got it now. Sorry I misunderstood.

I think the problem is that in a world where you can access the internet 24/7 instead of stepping away for basic needs to keep your sanity - its very easy to be constantly raging at the never ending injustices of the world; and there will always be injustices because people will always have opinions that someone doesn't like, and yes some of those opinions are That Bad - but some times if all you can do is rage (like if you're already past the point of reporting for harmful content or anything illegal), you have to decide if its a battle worth barking at nonstop.

"Care about the real world" typically means "Do things that help real people instead of trying to protect fictional characters from being written the 'wrong' way by sending death threats to fanfic writers"
