I'm not sure why you assume that the people who are running doom on random shit must automatically have the kind of unrelated skillsets that could solve eg world hunger

Fewer than you'd think. Without the scientific curiosity, talent and human need to do stuff just for the challenge of doing it that leads to humans fucking around with shit like this, we'd probably get into less trouble overall, but we wouldn't be solving much either.
