Who is this guy? What qualities are cool about him? Any good fic recs?

Namor the Submariner. Prince/King of Atlantis in the Marvel Universe. This asshole was featured in the first ever Marvel comic book (back when it was still Timely Comics) throwing down with his soon to be BFF The Human Torch (the Android one). Then he joined the Invaders alongside Captain America because he might have attacked NYC himself but he really hated Nazis too. He'd rip tanks apart with his bare hands and throw tantrums and refer to himself in the third person. Highly recommend. Um. He was a Frenemy of both Dr. Doom and Mr. Fantastic. He has a thing for Sue Storm, it's kind of memetic that he'll hit on married women. God, this mother fucker. He was on both the 'Heroic' Illuminati alongside Dr. Strange and Tony Stark AND the 'Villainous' Cabal with Loki and Normal Oswald AT THE SAME TIME. He had a great run with the Defenders in the 70s where he and Hulk got along pretty well and Namor quit the titular non-team more often than anyone else. He's Marvel's First Mutant and got sucked into X-Men nonsense before Krakoa with the Pheonix Five.

Reading Rec's!
-The Marvels Project by Brubaker and Epting is where I fell in love. It's a modern story about the Invaders in WWII (The Invaders were actually created in the 70's when Marvel realized they had three main characters in WWII but never really had them hang out and sought to rectify that mistake.)
-Submariner: The Depths is a horror tale about a submarine getting haunted by... something? Namor is kind of the horror monster they're all afraid of I love it.
-The Defenders: the run from the 70's. It's 70's nonsense and I love it and Namor is SO grumpy to be there.
-Invaders (2019) does a lot to stitch together his long drawn out and VERY messy back story (my man has had more brainwashing and amnesia than half of all soap operas) but it's new and the art is nice and the backstory holds together pretty well so I recommend it even if it isn't the best place to "start" since it's all about 'revealing' new info. The twists won't land if you don't remember the decades he was wondering NYC as a bearded homeless amnesiac until Johnny Storm recognized him, burned off his beard and pitched him in the ocean. That happened, I love comics.
-Somewhere in there he becomes CEO of a huge company and tries to clean up the ocean and idk what comic that was but I want to find it. Looks great honestly.

Basically, he's a messy jerk who's just as likely to attack NYC with a tidal wave as save it from a meteor and I want him to stay that way. I don't want him to get all whitewashed as 'Just defending the poor, put upon Atlanteans' because yeah he'll do anything to protect his people they're jerks too but I also don't want him to be a 'Super problematic abuser' because he is always trying to do what's best he's just occasionally REALLY bad at it.

And he never covers his abs. He wears vests just to prove his people have shirt-creating technology and he shuns that shit intentionally. <3

The only fic recs I have are *really* specific to my tastes and quiet problematic. ::Sigh::

As the person requesting the recs, I'll gladly take a gander...the dude sounds messy AF, so naturally it's not gonna be sunshine and rainbows.

There are a few things I'll pass on (like underage, scat, bestiality), so if your recs don't include these...feel free to share (at least for myself. I'll also likely take a look at my preferred pairing on AO3 which is reader/MC lol)

- both take place in the comics of the late 2000s where all the Invaders but Namor and Bucky were dead at the time and theyre both sad so they fuck about it.

According to Ao3 he's usually paired with Jim/Human Torch, Pietro/Quicksilver, and goddam Black Bolt (?!?!) And I'll admit I'm no great lover of any of those so I don't read that much of it.

For all my comic reading I've never gotten into the Fantastic Four, but obviously they interact. There are some great panels of Doom's recent wedding where it's revealed the bride slept with Johnny Storm. Namor is losing his absolute shit in the background with a champagne flute. It's a hoot.

Omg this man's story sounds crazy (and he sounds rather disjointed as a character!). I will definitely see if I can get my hands on the Submariner you mentioned, it sounds up my alley! And his homeless stint in NYC sounds interesting. This guy sounds wild, but with moments of good intentions -- sounds like the kind of messy character I'd like (depending on how much of a jerk he is, lol). Bonus that he's a shirtless snack :P
