Re: Secrets you don't want to make...

I’ve been following a WIP for the last ten months. It’s one of only a small handful of well-written long fics that exist for my current OTP, and up until recently I was enjoying it immensely. But once my OTP finally got together, 100K into the fic, my enjoyment dropped off steeply.

It’s a ship with a huge age gap, and 95% of the fics for this pairing are kind of dark, which just isn’t my thing. So I was extremely stoked to be reading this well-written longfic that was actually doing the work to make the relationship genuinely loving. But…they’ve just made it a little too healthy for my taste. The characters are taking it slow, they’re both going to therapy, they’re communicating constantly about their feelings and desires and insecurities, they’re constantly making sure the other is okay during sexytiems, etc, etc. And here I am feeling like fucking Goldilocks, because I want their love to be genuine and nontoxic, but now they’re so healthy that I’m bored.

And in the last update it became increasingly apparent that the older character is kind of a sub, which is a completely legitimate reading of his character, but a total nope for me personally.

I feel almost guilty for how much these things have put me off the fic. It went from checking daily to see if it’s been updated to not knowing if I even want to keep reading. And for no good reason. The writing is excellent. It’s all down to personal preference. What a bummer.
