[HBO's Rome]

I have been chasing the high of Atia of the Julii for 15 years. I've tried so many alternatives: Lucretia from the Borgias, Polly Walker's character from Bridgerton, Mrs. Reynolds from Guilded Age, Cersei Lannister, Lily van der Woodsen, on and on and on.

I've realized why they don't work. I'm not just after a cruel, cunning, and ambitious matriarch I love Atia because despite all her efforts she's just so bad at scheming! Things work out for her because she's Julius Caesar's niece and Octavian's mother and Mark Antony's girl friend; but, like, she makes the wrong call 100% of the time and I absolutely LOVE that for her.

Whoops, it's Mrs. Russell, not Rynolds. My bad.

Book!Cersei sounds close.

If the story were to finish she might be, but she's not as ~cunning~ as I'd like. Atia is really good at making the wrong play, she fully succeeds at shooting herself in the foot. Cirsei just gets drunk, rearms people who hate her, and imagines herself a genius. Books 6 and 7 might bring her up to my preferred level of disaster matriarch but I've given up hope on them.

Her flop era was a little too flop but I have some hopes. At least for book 6, we're never gonna see 7 fr

I've thought about it more. The vast majority of book!Cersei's bullshit happens in her chapters. And so we mostly just see it through her eyes and there's no joy in her nonsense. There's no 3rd party watching her torture a woman in her basement and vomiting right on the floor. And we can't fire up Wikipedia know the end result of all political machinations.
There are so many characters who are so close but no one hits just right.
