If that's the most depressing thing in your life, lucky, lucky you.

Sometimes it's something small that makes the whole house of cards collapse. Being a condescending asshole about it is unnecessary and unkind.

DA Yeah, but that's the vibe form this comm these days.

Another DA

Being a condescending asshole is definitely unnecessary and indefensible. I will add though that OP doesn’t describe it as one small thing they’re depressed about that makes the whole house of cards collapse, not the straw that breaks the camels back. They describe it as “the single largest source of their depression at the moment”. That’s a bit exaggerated sounding, and makes it understandable to me that people think that makes it sound like OP is fortunate not to have “bigger” problems.

But just because it’s not a bigger or more life-altering problem than some others doesn’t mean it’s not a valid thing to be depressed about. I can say that as someone with chronic pain, because gatekeeping what people “should” be depressed about helps nobody. And people implying they should get over it because it’s a smaller issue also helps nobody, because that’s not how depression works. I do think ignoring it would be a good move for OP, because there’s not much they can do about it besides vent and criticize the culture it comes from. But ignoring it isn’t a magical fix for being depressed about it either. I do still understand why people might think it’s small enough problem that OP might be lucky to have as their biggest source of depression. But actually saying it to them and brushing it off as insignificant isn’t understandable, and shouldn’t be happening. Why people can’t keep nasty thoughts like this to themselves instead of shaming people for being depressed over something that’s not earth-shattering, I don’t know. Because the moment you say the thoughts out loud or over text, you’ve made yourself the asshole. Not every source of depression is traumatic or even relatable to everyone. But it doesn’t have to be.

Again, nobody should ever gatekeep depression.

If we're being serious, I do agree to an extent. But I think you could make more or less the same point about OP's original post - they're shaming people making money out of fandom without knowing those peoples' financial situation. And you even have people posting in the thread about how the idea of creators having pressing money needs is a "Gen Z myth".

So, to me, this absolutely cuts both ways.

You have a good point.
