??? no? Just make things because you want to? What are you talking about?

(Anonymous) 2022-11-02 09:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I think they're trying to imply that some fans are so poor they have to monetise their hobby to justify the time they spend on it. Maybe these people exist, but they seem more like a gen Z myth.

(Anonymous) 2022-11-02 09:33 pm (UTC)(link)
It’s more the idea that nothing is worth doing unless you can get paid for it, but yeah. Gen Z philosophy.

The complete inundation of all fandom spaces with money in general is a pretty big source of mine, OP, so I kind of feel you.

(Anonymous) 2022-11-02 10:23 pm (UTC)(link)
DA Same here for me. It just makes me sad, and fandom does feel very different now.

(Anonymous) 2022-11-02 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
But they don't have to.

(Anonymous) 2022-11-02 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Exactly. They just want to because it's an easy way to make money without having to put in much effort.

I could shit out some chibi art for a popular fandom in maybe 20 minutes and rake in the bucks because people will pay for their faves.

(Anonymous) 2022-11-02 10:41 pm (UTC)(link)
mte. the state of the world, the economy, war, shitty people, risk of losing my health care, and at least two autoimmune diseases are the primary causes of my depression. fanthings feeling pressured to make money off their hobby is nothing more than a minor annoyance.

people feeling pressured to monetize everything is shitty, to be sure. but we can literally say "no, that's not in my plans" and get on with life.

I think there are still plenty of creators out there having fun and not making money off of it. But people needing to make money (in general) is just a fact of life.

(Anonymous) 2022-11-02 10:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks for saying it.

(Anonymous) 2022-11-02 10:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I mean, you don't, though. You can certainly weigh up if your time spent on hobbies is worth it, but being in fandom is a very, very cheap hobby. Especially if you're a writer.

I think you're on the wrong tract a little. People who want to spend most of their time making high-quality stuff and gain a following have to have some form of income, yes. but people who just want to do what they want don't have to and usually don't think that they have to until they want followers/quality/majority of effort into it.

The fact of the matter is that people who monetize their stuff as treating their stuff as a job, which is no different than any other media people do.

But yes, capitalism is depressing.

Yeah, this.

(Anonymous) 2022-11-03 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
It's like Christmas tree displays in September or Nestle-sponsored Pride parades -- commercialism can make anything depressing.

(Anonymous) 2022-11-03 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
I kind of get what you mean, but at the same time I'm not that bothered about what other people do in fandoms.

There's always been people trying to make money out of fandoms for as long as I've been into it (especially coming from the fandom spaces on deviantart), which doesn't bother me since there's still plenty of fanworks that are free anyways.
Like with ships I don't like, I just ignore them. Unless of course if you're in a fandom that has 90% asking for commissions instead of actual fanworks then I'm sorry you're in such a shit fandom space OP.

(Anonymous) 2022-11-03 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
People in fandom getting depressed about something that doesn't actually affect them and is really none of their business is laughable.

(Anonymous) 2022-11-03 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
IAWTC.

(Anonymous) 2022-11-03 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
If that's the most depressing thing in your life, lucky, lucky you.

(Anonymous) 2022-11-03 02:43 am (UTC)(link)
Sometimes it's something small that makes the whole house of cards collapse. Being a condescending asshole about it is unnecessary and unkind.

This rubs me wrong.

I don't know your financial situation, anon, but it's shitty out here for most of us right now. Like... two-jobs-two-roommates-and-still-barely-making-ends-meet shitty. Not to mention how badly the disabled community gets fucked over when it comes to capitalism. I'm not about to sniff at someone who can make art that makes people happy while also being able to monetize it. For god's sake, we're poorer than we've ever been unless you were born into generational wealth, how can you possibly hold it against people to want to make a little money in a way that doesn't make them want to die?

The world sucks. I'm sorry this trend annoys you, but it's not an actual problem, and I will defend to the death people who are able to make their lives a little less shitty by charging for it.

Bless your soul.

(Anonymous) 2022-11-03 07:20 am (UTC)(link)
Having been in fandom for 2+ decades, there have always been penniless creators who were still creating fanworks because they loved it. (Because if you already have access to the internet, writing is free). So that demographic are still creating, they just have kofi and patreon now if they do wish to try to make a bit of pocket change.

Just... not sure what is depressing you about this that isn't depressing about capitalism in general?
