I remember someone saying "Penny was a toy that two boys fought over until it broke" and that's when I realized.

That's a good point. And it's interesting, because at the time, it was considered insightful in that Joss seemed to understand that neither of those two boys really understood Penny.

I mean, that's not textually wrong either. It only seems more likely to not have been the intent in retrospect of the shit Joss has done since. At the time we didn't have any of that information.

Yeah Penny got the freaking raw end of the deal. I was so charmed by the original approach of the show at the beginning and then I just hated it instantly.

You can make a feminist reading from that. I didn't look that deeply either way, but you absolutely can look at it more than one way.

You definitely could, and I tried because I really enjoyed the show. But she's an object, not a subject.

I always saw DHSAB as a very feminist story, because I assumed that was exactly the point. It was a commentary on men's (often fragile and oversized) egos, the way men look to women to fulfill their egos, the way that harms women, and the way men end up harming themselves through their inability to genuinely self-actualize because they mistake dominance and possession as primary means of self-actualization when they aren't. And so they just become increasingly entrenched in their toxic beliefs about themselves and the world, while citing all the injustices and ills the world has dealt them as though that justifies their toxicity.

And to be honest, I still think that was the point. I think Doctor Evil was a very astute commentary on toxic masculinity and how it often functions, and I think that absolutely was Joss's intent. That doesn't mean he isn't/wasn't also an embodiment of a lot of the toxic shit he was commenting on. Frankly it kind of seems like Joss used his work as a confessional for his "sins" (i.e. the worst parts of himself) on the regular.
