Yes, it's blatantly offensive imo

(Anonymous) 2022-11-11 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Uhh. But what would the reasons be?

(Anonymous) 2022-11-12 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
Made a bad excuse for why FFXVI doesn't have very many POC.

Like, yes, criticize racism, but don't do it by also being racist.

(Anonymous) 2022-11-12 02:37 am (UTC)(link)
The thing that pissed me off about that article was that by POC, the writers very clearly meant "black." Because if you're not black you're not a POC, I guess, even if you're another racial minority.

AYRT - Oh, thanks! Yeah I read his take but have zero firsthand experience with the context so I couldn't help but think, by that didn't he mean "no I am not picking this fight with the Japanese and Asian playerbase as a whole, die mad"? Because those people asked about black representation in particular. And, uh, it's a Japanese game set in a fantasy medieval world that is as full of white people as any other fantasy medieval world (should they be? Probably not, but that's how it was in older popular franchises that defined the medieval fantasy genre). Surely having black and white people but no Asian people would alienate their major playerbase? Which doesn't sound interesting. Which I assumed is what they meant by "fine but we're not changing that" lowkey.

The only FF game I love is VII and there are like, Cloud (white?), Aerith (white? but alien), Tifa (maybe white????? this one is great), Yuffie (Japanese), Vincent (?????), Barrett (black), Cid (white, in this universe. Sometimes brown. Occasionally purple) and Red (lion). Most meant to be "white?" anyway so as to not completely alienate their Asian playerbase but stick to the "it's medieval fantasy so it's gotta be mostly white people" line of reasoning to avoid the debate (of matters of race which is a tricky debate for a Japanese gaming company to have with the world at large anyway) I assume.

(Same anon because I forgot: there was discussion even back in the days about Barrett being a racist stereotype so I feel like maybe they have been actively avoiding racial matters entirely so as to not inadvertently offend any players. Which seems valid, if sad that this is the current state of the world.)

The whiteness of some of the characters could be argued to be mukokuseki, but that argument might be splitting hairs honestly. So I get what you’re saying. And I agree.

As an aside, I do understand the people that consider Barrett a racist stereotype, but I always liked him as a character anyways. There was also Sazh from FF XIII off the top of my head, so at least SquareEnix didn’t completely avoid having any black characters or a multiracial cast after the reception to Barrett. Sazh deserved to be in better games than the XIII games though.

AYRT - Ohh, so there is a name for that thing they do in anime! Yes, that's what I meant. Thanks for teaching me!

Hmm, no experience with FFXIII here, but I have always loved Barrett. He is a hardworking and nice person, and his whole relationship with Marlene arc is particularly endearing, if heartwrenching. Although I can see where the complaints come from, because he is quite stereotypical in (physical) presentation I feel like his actual personality subverts prejudiced stereotypes rather than endorses them. It's a pity his outward presentation is deserving of the criticism because otherwise I think he is good representation.

No problem!

Couldn’t agree more about Barrett! He’s an amazing character!

It disgusts me how quickly "Japanese person said a pretty shitty thing" becomes "GOD AREN'T JAPANESE PEOPLE JUST SO AWFUL AND RACIST LOL FUCKIN JAPAN"

Every. Fuckin. Time. But then these are the same people who will unironically call East Asian people "white-adjacent," so I guess I'm not sure what I should be expecting? It's just so incredibly disheartening.

Don't let it get to you. It's Americans sublimating their own issues on to other countries. They do the same to Europe. There was an anon who went off on one a week or so ago about how Rishi Sunak would never become PM because Britain is too racist. They like to make the rest of the world their sineaters.

(Anonymous) 2022-11-12 01:33 pm (UTC)(link)
DA

This isn’t an American-only type of backwards thinking though. And it’s not some common way of thinking for all Americans either, any more than it is common in other countries. There are racists for sure, but not everyone in America is racist or defaults to racism, nor projects racism on the rest of the world. Or would think something as mindbogglingly stupid as “East Asians are white-adjacent”. I know you didn’t say outright that you believe all Americans think like this. But it does kind of feel like you’re implying it to me. It feels like you’re making a broad generalization of Americans to me.

There is racists in Europe as well, but it’s ridiculous to think everyone or even most people are racist there. So the anon you’re talking about is obviously an idiot who doesn’t know what they’re talking about. And shouldn’t speak on matters they don’t understand in regards to countries they don’t live in. So I’m not disagreeing that that anon is wrong for swooping in to say that.

(Anonymous) 2022-11-12 02:30 pm (UTC)(link)
NAYRT - IA with this. But as a non-American (possibly POC by some American standards) I also get what AYRT was talking about. The English-speaking internet is vastly populated by American people and sometimes it feels like they default to their own local views of racism and everyone who doesn't get them is Wrong and Bad and should be Cancelled even if they are willing to discuss and LEARN. So that's not making progress for anyone. That actively hurts people (like the 1st anon itt) including (or rather, particularly) non-whites who suffer racial discrimination.

Obviously that is not everyone in the US thankfully and obviously there are racist (not even "accidentally" racist - blatantly.) people elsewhere. It's usually the fandom kids who don't know better yet, but it can get pretty ugly and self-righteous.

I understand where you’re coming from, you have a good point.
