Even back when SA2 came out and I was a stupid teenage who would absorb anything Sonic with barely any thought or critique, I looked at Shadow and scoffed at his unnecessary addition. Like, I always felt his clear intent as a one-shot character who died at the end of SA2 should have been it.

Instead they just kept dragging him along even though Knuckles was right there (yes, I might have been bitter back in the days when it was mostly Shadow vs. Sonic while Knuckles was pushed to the side.) He was already Sonic's rival and him being the opposite of Sonic made him a thousand times more interesting. That includes all the echidna lore which I loved in the games.

THIS!!!!! JUST THIS! LISTEN TO THIS ANON! Actually I feel like "Shadow is an useless 1-shot character" was a rather popular opinion in Sonic fandom at that time?? And then uh somehow he became a fan favorite and Knuckles became the "who's that?" character for a period of time. Sighh. The echidna lore is soo beautiful too. You're so right for this!

My secret is that I dislike Shadow even though I have never properly played any games he's been in, just because 1) I like the games he hasn't been in, and 2) I love Knuckles and dislike the fact that he was put aside in favor of Shadow in a certain era's titles.

Meanwhile Kunckles has been superfluous and largely existed as a "teehee he's stupid" joke and they have had no idea how to use Knuckles at all. HE's honestly usually just attached to have him as part of the cast.

Knuckles is a basic bitch who was duped by Eggman in his first appearance so of course give his reputation is going to be being dumb as a bunch of rocks
