Music that you like but would never talk to anyone else about it

(Anonymous) 2022-11-12 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Guilty pleasure? Problematic? Unpopular? Have you ever listen to anything that you know other people would have 'opinions' about it.

Inspired by the fact that I've been listening to Skillet and finding out that they're not very well liked (but ngl its definitely the kind of music teen me would have been angsting along to).

Usually not a fan of Taylor Swift, but I've become obsessed with her new song Anti-Hero. I don't think I've ever related to a song so much. It is really embarrassing to me honestly.

Same. I don’t dislike her, and I’ve liked some of her others a little before. But Anti-Hero I genuinely love and relate to in some ways.

+2. I'm not her biggest fan, but she kind of got my ass with this song. I can't stop listening to it.

I have a playlist full of fan songs that I've been collecting since 2010 with songs like Elizabeth Smart's Destiel songs and Yu-Gi-Oh! Abridged Lady Gaga parodies.

I listen and relate to Amanda Palmer's Runs in the Family way too much. Don't even know why, nothing in the lyrics really applies to me except the reference to depression. But people online hate Amanda Palmer and this feels to... revealing? to share with people who know me irl.

Generally, just looking at my Spotify most played songs, liked songs and what Spotify recommends me is the kind of stuff that would make even me go "you okay?" just by title alone, never mind the lyrics.

Most of the lyrics in that song don't apply to me at all, but man, it still fucking hits.

Just got into Megan Thee Stallion (heard Ms.Nasty on a Mixcloud show, liked it and I am not normally into that type of music)...I think it's her personality that I like as well.

I occasionally listen to Country music even though it can be really corny.

Taking into account that I play Ifuudoudou while my neighbors listen, I can't say there is any kind of music I would be ashamed of admiting to liking. I like many weird "shameful" sogs tho

well, in honor of SKillet, I can say I still listen to 90s christian rock even though I'm an atheist. I only really mention it here on anon sometimes.

the station I worked for broke Skillet in 1997. I'm sorry/you're welcome? tbh their debut album was better than anything that happened after John discovered keyboards.

I enjoy Blurred Lines weirdly a lot. Just like, the vibe of it, I guess. I wish I didn't, but I do.

Want U Back by Cher Lloyd, because it's just SO petty and shallow and mean...but so, so fun.

I also feel weird about enjoying some of Lana Del Rey's stuff. Like, she's an excellent artist, but also, some of her stuff is very "bad men are sexy, and dealing drugs is sexy, and being objectified is sexy, and gender roles are sexy, and casting couches are sexy, and doing absolutely anything for your man because you're a ride or die girl is sexy," and that can be...really fascinating to engage with, definitely. But also sometimes I find it very uncomfortable. Because like, part of what makes LDR's music so fascinating and deft is that it never overtly feels like commentary. But that's also what makes it uncomfortable, sometimes, when she's singing about something really toxic as though it were an experience she personally had that was the height of sexiness and romance, and you can't tell whether she truly means it, or whether it's commentary, or whether the meaning-it is part of the commentary, or what. I guess you could say her music is a complicated experience for a feminist like me to have. But I have it. :P

I used to like Blurred Lines. The only reason I stopped is because it got overplayed on my local stations. I wish it was because of how bad it is. But no, it’s for such a simple reason that isn’t related to my feminism. So I feel you.

I like Want U Back for a similar reason as you! I kind of have a soft spot for fictional ‘mean girl’ works, even if being snotty and a bully is obviously terrible irl and I would hate people like that if I met them. And I have met and hated people like that. But since it’s just a song by someone who was clearly a teen at the time, it’s petty fun to me.

I also like Lana Del Rey, but she definitely has some problems. You explained the disconnect really well, and I agree!

I would say all the anime and video game music I listen to, but I’m almost never embarrassed to be caught listening to them. Songs from dub soundtracks like Pokemon and Cardcaptors on the other hand? Especially because I was already “too old” to watch those and grow up with them when they came to North America.

Also, songs I got from memes, or songs I already had that become inseparably tied to memes. Songs like “Jockel der Gartenteichspringbrunnen” and “Moskau” for the former. Songs like “Never Gonna Give You Up” and “Rasputin” for the latter.

And songs that I have purely for nostalgic value to me, not because they were ever actually considered good. I’m a sentimental fool, what can I say. I mentioned one of these nostalgic songs on here before when it became my earworm for a solid month, “Invisible” by Clay Aiken. Another nostalgic song is “Possum Kingdom”. I don’t think that song was considered bad if I’m remembering correctly, but I still feel weirdly embarrassed whenever I’m caught listening to it. Same with “Living in a Box”.

I unironically like Nickleback, yeah they've got the generic songs that evreyone rips on but they've got some legit good stuff as well.

As for 'I kind of hate the lyrics but the song is a bop' Papi from Nicole Scherzinger and Todrick Hall despite the fact that it's very much about a lady agent getting new talent to sleep with her for work, and React a little bit as it kind of props up the 'nice men are boring, treat me badly' thing that is a bit eurgh to me. But both songs are super fucking fun.
