I would say troll, but this is par for the course for Aussie acting claiming

We like to claim Sam Neill too (I mean, if he keeps on telling us we're unAustralian if we don't eat lamb, we should get something in exchange)

Depending on his behaviour, NZ can have Russell Crowe back

We've almost completely disowned Mel Gibson (and he us). US can keep him

It's just how we work. NZ understands and does the same thing (they haven't claimed Rusty as their own for decades)
