Advertising you like

(Anonymous) 2022-11-16 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
I've been thinking about Twitter VS tumblr and how much I love my nonsense blue checkmark but hate the idea of paying for a serious blue checkmark.

What kind of ads work for you? What ads do you hate completely?

Only ads I like are ones done by nonprofits that help make people aware of genuine issues in the world that they may not be aware of.

Generally I use adblock on my computer at all times.

This. I despise advertising, as a general rule.

I hate nearly all ads, but I've got to agree the nonsense blue checkmark on tumblr was a genius idea.

I'll go first.

Positive: I saw an ad for Against the Storm on Reddit. It was a featured post with the comments on. I'm used to scrolling by sponsored posts but the fact that there were six comments on it made me see what they were up to. I love the game, it's adorable and exactly the kind of city building I'm into. But I wouldn't have noticed it without those comments.

Negative: a company I won't name because fuck them makes good grooming products but I've stopped buying them because I got their youtube ad over and over. And I hate their ad. It's starts out like "We're from an older world, a world of chivalry" and its harkening back to this nostalgic masculinity and it just grates on me. I expect the next line to be "When men were MEN and women didn't vote" so that ones a failure.

Ads that imply a lifestyle in which one has a large but close-knit social group, with lots of hanging out, doing casual group activities, and having a blast.

I'm in my mid-thirties but the whole AEO-style, "You spend summers and weekends at the lake-house with your ten closest friends; you are young, attractive, and free" messaging has never released its stranglehold on my brain. I want it so bad I can taste it.

Also in my mid thirties, and my group of friends keep on trying to make this happen for holidays. It's getting increasingly logistically difficult the more partners and children we add to the group, and the more geographically far away we get. And we all get tired by 10pm now.

Sigh. The dream is still there!

I hate all video and pop ads with the fire of a thousand suns. I am THIS close to getting rid of my phone because of it, they have gotten so bad this year.

Vintage magazine ads were alright though. Some great graphic design here and there.

I haven't had a popup ad in ages, I thought they went out of fashion because they inspire instant antipathy!

What browser are you using?

Two current ads I hate completely
the Fruit Loops ad with very ugly animation and this idea that Fruit Loops come from some stupid looking alien world. I know it's aimed at little kids but it's very irritating, especially when they supposedly "find" a Fruit Loop when they're all over the place. You also can't hear some of the dialogue.
The revival of those Old Navy ads where everybody acts like idiots and it's supposed to be funny. Of all the things in the 90's, they brought THOSE back?? And Jennifer Coolidge, who can actually be really funny when she's in good movies!!

silly nonsensical ads, like the pikaman on tumblr, I like

anything that promotes an artist who’s already trending no 1 (looking at you TayTay), a billion dollar business, etc I hate

When youtubers have a say on how they do their advertising - which can potentially be annoying, but sometimes really creative or just funny (one youtuber that comes to mind is Caddicarus who has it stipulated in his contract with any sponsors that his Kite mascot Spons must be part of it - or Tomska talking about trying to find the limit of what a vpn service would approve of for advertising with a skit).

I don't really know what J.G. Wentworth does, but I always want to call them.

I hate YouTube ads in general. But lately I have a grudging soft spot for this specific genre of ads for mobile games. The ones that have daily life revolve around the games for the people in them, and have hierarchies everywhere based on who’s the best at the game. Or at least who’s got the biggest advantages in the end due to their promo codes. The ones I’m talking about are campy live action, but there’s some animated ones that have the same vibe. Idk they just remind me of Yugioh in how these respective games are the most important things to the societies in them. And I dig that for some reason.

I have no interest in actually playing any of the games, though.
