I can think of some characters who might do a fair amount of checking during first-time sex with a new partner but even then there are ways to write it without listing every single time they ask something.

YEAH-- like, dirty talk your check-ins! 'Do you like ___?' and 'Do you want ___?' can both be hot as hell while allowing someone to either affirm that everything is good, or redirect the action as necessary.

OP - In all fairness to this author, there is a very very good reason for it in this fic. I didn't want to give too many details, because I'd rather the fic not be identifiable, but what the hell. The context is: they go through a pretty brutal Fuck or Die scenario about a year before they get together, and the younger party was a virgin before that. So it genuinely makes absolute sense that they check in with each other CONSTANTLY. Because trauma. Lots of trauma on both sides. And also, huge age-gap. So I genuinely can't fault the author for their narrative choices even a little bit. I would literally be faulting them for, like, emotional continuity.

It's just that when you add ALL the healthy, careful, methodical, level-headed stuff up, it's a lot. The fic takes a very nuanced and realistic approach to the premise and I can't fault it for that. But at the same time, I guess I personally like my tropey fanfic scenarios a little less realistic and a little more horny. Lol.

I am totally with you though that constant checking in is just. SO BORING. I just feel like I need to be fair to this fic, because the absolute caution exhibited by the characters is about as justified as it's possible for it to be.

All good. I can see it being justified and even probably realistic, but, for me - even THAT caveat does not make me want to read a fic like that one bit.

Kudos to them for writing an (apparently) very good fic, but yeah - just would make me stop reading after a point.

OP - Yeah, I get you. Truthfully, there is just a certain degree of fantasy and dramatic tension I like in my fanfic--even when it runs counter to what's realistic.

I should've immediately realized this fic was going to be more realistic than I enjoy, because the Fuck Or Die scene was like 98% "a bad time for everyone" and only like 2% hot. But I ignored the signs. My bad.

Yeah, 'fuck or die' has never been a thing I enjoyed too much. Either it's hard-core non-con that fucks people up, or it's a boost to get two people together that really want to be together (which is still non-con but more dub-con and mostly fine), but which irritates me because - why does it take DYING for you people to admit attraction?

I mean, you're not wrong! But also...because A is seventeen and B is forty-one? Because A is wildly repressed and B believes A is asexual and is trying really, really hard to be respectful of that? Because it's incest? Because they're supposed to hate each other but there's this attraction they can't shake? Because internalized and/or period-typical homophobia? Because they're married to other people?

I am not at all trying to be, you know, quarrelsome. Trope preferences vary. I just feel like there are actually a lot of fairly solid reasons for two characters to feel like they simply cannot admit to or act on their attraction. I got particularly into Fuck Or Die after getting into a huge age-gap ship with a character who is barely legal, because it lets you get right to the spicy stuff without making the older character seem like a sleaze. Your honor, they didn't take advantage; they were forced to fuck that teenager.

To me, it's fiction, so I don't need really reality-grounded, legally-defensible reasons for two characters to fuck like bunnies.

I meant in the general sense, too. There are a lot of fandoms encompassed by the possibilities I listed in my previous comment. Every Enemies To Loves ship for one. Every incest ship for another. Most extreme age-gap ships for a third. That was really my point. There are some ships where maybe they don't have any solid reasons to not admit their feelings, but there are just as many ships that DO have solid reasons to not admit their feelings. So "argh why don't they just talk about their feelings like adults?! Why do they have to be forced into it?!" is an argument I agree with for some pairings, but not for others. Sometimes it really is The Love That Dare Not Speak Its Name.
