Honestly, you're completely right about this one.

Yes, I would like less mystery box, this genre simply doesn't work with it imo.

I think it's just a basic storytelling thing, really. Writers need to be good at figuring out what structure makes the most sense for the story they're telling. And modern TV shows definitely have a bad habit of defaulting to mystery box even when that makes no sense.

It's a really bad habit, and it actually frustrates the show thematically imo here. As well as makes it tonally very discordant from an adaptation perspective. like it's annoying elsehwere, but i think it's very much works against this type of fantasy.

I think they did it that way because they wanted to save "the viewer knows who he is and some of the characters don't necessarily know" for season 2 but that said...I knew something was up almost instantly and was surprised by the 'twist' at all. And I know I definitely wasn't the only one. I wasn't as hard on the show as some people (there were aspects I loved) but if your viewers have already arrived at an inevitable conclusion, it does feel like a time-wasting exercise by that point.

I think it could have been cool to reveal to the audience early on but not to the character in-universe until the end. But I didn't mind the way they did it. I don't think it was intended to be a big twist.

you're right and you should say it

Yes! I really wanted to love this show but the way they’ve produced it just isn’t working for me at all :(

(Anonymous) 2022-11-19 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
I have to say it is unfortunately an effective tactic to get the show streaming more, because I went back and watched the whole thing again after I knew because it all felt different.

Had the opposite effect for me because now every scene that's only in the show to be red herrings feel extra useless.

I didn't ship him with Galadriel before, but after the reveal I certainly do. Hot like the fires of Mt Doom.

I shipped them before in a cracky way (him as Annatar obsessing over this elf woman who hates him, and he just doesn't understand why anyone would hate him because he's perfect). But now I ship it semi-seriously. Both are hot (and both versions of Galadriel).

Still can't get over how ridiculously bland and basic this dude looks but that's kinda this show's thing for everyone so what did I expect.
