Certain CGI definitely hits uncanny valley for me, especially when they use it on humanoid characters or overlay it on human actors. There's an image of a valley on the secret, but usually the most uncanny valley complaints are not from scenery CGI, it's from humanoid CGI. And it's grating enough to turn me off from lots of things.

What about "not wanting to see CGI you dislike or are bothered by seeing" is "weak and nonsensical" to you?

Well, no, that's pretty much my point: "uncanny valley" only makes sense if you're talking about things that are meant to realistically resemble humans and other living creatures. If someone is saying that CGI is bad in general because it's "uncanny valley", I don't think that makes sense, because "uncanny valley" just doesn't apply across the board. And that's how I interpreted OP's secret, so that's what I was responding to.

In general, IMO, the problems with CGI don't come from limitations in the technology or the skill of the artists. The problem with CGI comes from the way that CGI is produced and the way that it's used by Hollywood.

If your point is that uncanny valley = humans and other living creatures, nowhere in this does OP specify the people who complain about CGI are are complaining about other things. Therefore we can assume people who talk about uncanny valley are using it to mean humans and other living things.

I don't know where you're getting the idea that many people out there are talking about spaceships or saying "this CGI rock gives me uncanny valley." Unless you interpreted the landscape image in the secret as an example of CGI OP is talking about, rather than a "valley" that's a play on "uncanny valley"...?

I wasn't really making any assumptions, I was very much just responding to what OP said, which I interpreted as "people saying that all CGI is bad because it's uncanny valley"

(Anonymous) 2022-11-19 03:41 am (UTC)(link)
But nobody, including OP, said "all CGI"? They said people who say "the CGI" of a show triggers their uncanny valley response.

I think you might interpret the secret differently if you read it again?
