(Anonymous) 2022-11-19 05:10 am (UTC)(link)If you think redemption shouldn't happen to a character who's done things that are genuinely horribly bad, and not just kind of bad or only done with a good reason, you've missed the point of redemption.

(Anonymous) 2022-11-19 02:04 pm (UTC)(link)Sure, but I don’t think they were saying only people who did forgivable bad things can be redeemed. Just that it’s harder to swallow redemption arcs if the person being redeemed has committed atrocities that are inexcusable. Or has sexually assaulted someone repeatedly and knowingly like in the case of Regina. The act of this type of character getting a redemption arc can feel like they’re being let off too easily by the narrative to some people. Especially if it’s not handled well by writers. Pretty much any type of character can potentially go through a redemption arc, no matter what they’ve done. But some think that not every one of them should. That’s what I think AYRT and others in the threads mean. Or at least, I think it’s closer to what they mean than them saying only certain types of characters who didn’t do anything too bad can be redeemed, like you’re saying they mean.

I loved Regina. Still think she's an interesting character. But the show should either not have written the rape or should have acknowledged it.
