I can see how that would work.

So far, Diona and Sayu rub me the wrong way, especially Diona. Qiqi mostly doesn't.

I dislike that we've got a pile of little girls in Genshin and no short male models, but I avoid the chibis unless their skills are specifically useful because their overwrought cuteness mannerisms grate on me, and I doubt that would be less of an issue if they added little boys. (Judging from how so many NPC kids of either gender are doing a stupid cheering-hop day and night and acting ridiculous.)

Man, absolutely. We have, what, five playable little girls and no boys at all? Not saying that I’d pull for a little boy model character if they ever released one, but you really can see who’s the actual market HYV is targeting here.

For me, Klee was the first contender for this, really. I found her first story quest to be absolutely grating and have the unfortunate timing of releasing before Albedo. I dislike seeing children running unchecked with adults (and the fandom) forgiving them because they’re ‘cute’. She did get better now as she plays off Albedo really well, but that first quest still soured me. I think Sayu’s hangout is also like this, yeah?

Did you end up pulling for Nahida, then? She almost got me, as the secret said, due to being an interesting character with a very useful kit to boot. But yeah, I can’t with that T-pose running. Maybe on her rerun someday.

I absolutely love Klee by now, though I have to admit her initial quest annoyed me as well, for the same reasons you stated. A friend pulled for her because she's a diehard Albedo fan and wanted Klee just for the big brother connection and so I got used to her after my initial dislike. She is adorable and damn, she's useful. And, you know, her mom is mostly absent and when she's not, she's kinda pretty irresponsibly crazy and her brother figure is a homunculus with limited social skills/a kinda warped understanding of common sense. So her whole thing kinda makes sense.

I do side-eye the whole "let's for some reason treat these obvious children like adult for reasons" - I mean, Klee was supposed to be hired as an explosions expert in the Chasm for crying out loud. WHAT ARE YOU SMOKING, PEOPLE OF TEYVAT?!
(And don't get me started on that Ella kid and her unchecked obsession with Hilichurls.)


I think my main issue with Sayu and Diona is that I am STILL not sure if they're supposed to be just child-sized but actually older than they look or kids who play grown-up and are indulged by the actual adults around them. There have been pretty conflicting signals about it.

And yeah, the whole "only little girls" is a bit iffy. I'm not particularly interested in Shotas, but come on.

I'm also a diehard Albedo fan, so I really understand you and your friend! But yes, Klee's story quest lacks the context of her background and makes more sense in hindsight as the story, especially Alice's and Albedo's, gets expanded upon. Meanwhile, event story quest these days properly let her be an actual, if a bit slightly odd, child and downplays her more menace-to-Tevyat's-ecosystem qualities. I genuinely like her now as well.

I'm a sucker for pink-haired characters so I just try to overlook Diona's lore entirely. I know talking about age in this fandom is like opening a can of worms, but yeah, not a fan of letting these vaguely children looking characters be treated like adults. For Sayu, I see her as a somewhat young teenager who's just short. For Diona, after the last Weinlesefest, I absolutely cannot see her as anything but a kid.

...talking about this really makes me feel that Genshin has a really shit system of storytelling by locking almost every characters development in time-limited events. Other than Klee, Eula is also someone whom I only warmed up due to events.
