I think part of the appeal was that the Thrawn trilogy came along when there wasn't much new material in the Star Wars universe. And Thrawn was a very different type of villain from Palpatine or Vader (or Jabba or the Gorax). I liked the trilogy and I read it not that long after it came out, but I haven't read it since. I will say Thrawn reminded me of a vampire.
