I think this perspective is elitist (in that you judge those who probably can't afford the DVD sets), however, considering that shows that are still on air generally survive on either ratings or DVD sells - someone has to get a Nielsen box and/or buy the DVD sets. Otherwise, there would be nothing for everyone to enjoy.

I buy the DVDs to support the show I love and to save my hard-drive the hassle of saving every episode of every show I like, but, some people can't - and there's nothing wrong with that. I just love people loving what I love too and sharing that. Isn't that what fandom is about?

I'd buy every DVD boxset if I could. I have a list. But I can't, so I only buy the ones I know I'm gonna watch over and over and over, and don't think I'm any less of a fan of anything that I don't own. And honestly, this kind of secret just makes me sad and highlights the fact that my family's constantly struggling with money issues.

Basing fan worth only on how much money someone spends on it is silly, IMO, but I DO think that fans should support shows as much as possible within their means. Creators have bills to pay, too, and they won't get paid if their stuff isn't making any money. (And to head off any comments, I'm a college student and have been out of work for a year, so no, I am not made out of money.)

You're being kind of an ass about it, but I agree with the basic sentiment -- the best way to support a show, and to make sure that more shows like it get made, is to support it with your money as well as your enthusiasm. I don't wanna be all RAH RAH CAPITALISM but it costs money to make these things in the first place, and studios/publishers/etc won't back projects if they aren't profitable.

as a Scot living in France..we don't get the DVD's to my fandom ( doctor who) and the dubs are out a year later and to be honest, suck. So i'll keep using torrents. Considering how much the beeb took in license fees when i lived in Scotland, i reckon i've paid my due several times over.

I would agree if we were talking about a band. Being a fan of a band and stealing their music is hypocritical. TV is different though. You can watch it on TV for free and you're not taking any profit away from the broadcaster by doing so.

There's a difference between "getting shows legitly" and "spending a whole shitload of money on fandom". Am I less of a fan if I don't buy the full set? Am I less of a fan if I watch it live and tape it--which is still considered legit?

Moreover, what about people who download in order to sample something to see if they'd then like to purchase it? I downloaded all the Utena soundtracks to see if I'd like them, and guess what--I bought them all. Or what if you download something because it'll be a long time before you CAN buy it?
