145. Personally, I don't think Amanda's music sounds anything like PJ's. Musicians pay their respects and emulate each other all the time. That's how things evolve. Nothing to get your panties in a twist over.

You might want to ton down your judgmental character, because this isn't like your friends have a friend you can't stand--this is famous people you will never know having a friend you can't stand. And that's dumb. Deny not yourself the awesomeness of Neil Gaiman and Voltaire (both way awesomer than PJ Harvey or Amanda Palmer) because of some single girl with a piano artist du jour (and I like Amanda Palmer's music and even I know she's just one in a sea of 'edgy' female singers with painos copying Tori and Ani and PJ).

Never liked PJ. Love Amanda. My love came thanks to kylecassidy and his beautiful work which finally drove me to seek her out. But not every "edgy" female singer/songwriter is the same, bb or a copycat of someone else. Sorry you feel butthurt about it.

Hmm... I half agree about not liking Amanda Palmer. But my reasoning has nothing to do with PJ Harvey. One of my friends absolutely adores Amanda Palmer, but I'm a little conflicted about her. I love her music, but honestly, I'm not sure I really like her in general (if that makes sense?). I think it's because she reminds of someone--or, rather, she is kind of like the embodiment of all the things I dislike about someone I know.

I feel a similar way about her. I think she's got a cool sense of fashion and I enjoy listening to her music, but sometimes I read stuff where she's been interviewed and she comes across as thinking she's like some sort of...modern-day Mozart. Her attitude just rubs me the wrong way.

OP here,
I used to like her music, the first album and maybe a little into the second where she was still talking about herself/her relationships and not trying to be politically controversial and stir shit up. Since the last Dolls album and her solo, however... not so much. Admittedly, there's one or two songs still worth listening to, but her whole persona has just become something I can't stand.

okay. since this entire thread seems to be YAY I AGREE i should probably post anon but fuck it. i honestly do not UNDERSTAND how anyone could hate her other than being shallow and not getting her based on her lack of conventional looks. that's always where my suspicions go whenever anyone says they hate her, probably because of all the little teenage emo girls that said she was a "fugly troll" when she toured with patd because she didn't look like the typical little internet-whoring scene queens they were used to. but i'm not going to make assumptions and i'm just going to address what the op said in the secret itself. in wearing that shirt, she said SPECIFICALLY that she was paying homage to polly jean. i don't really see how they have ANY similarities musically other than being female and artistically uninhibited? amanda is always very vocal about her respect for other musicians and i can't see her "ripping off" anyone. her persona is her own. it's totally unique to me. but i guess i'm biased and i could be wrong. though i don't think you have to worry about being alone in your opinion because she gets a LOT of haters. sometimes i honestly feel like disliking her is becoming trendy lately.

I used to really like the Dresden Dolls, like, A LOT, and now, lately...

I can only really listen to their self-titled album and Amanda herself I find very annoying.

It's SO ANNOYING for me, just because she's recently exploded in popularity (or so it seems to myself) so I would have loads of people to discuss music with and all that. But no, I've gone off her NOW. Of all times. Huh.

I'm really glad to feel like I'm not alone. I really can't stand her, and I used to feel the complete opposite and it really bugs me.

I adore both Amanda and PJ, and I think Amanda is inspired by her - in the same way she has spoken out of being inspired by The Smiths or The Cure; just because she clearly respects all of them greatly doesn't mean she actually sounds like any of them. I like Amanda Palmer and I still get irrationally pissed off whenever I see that PJ Harvey inspired photo.

Possibly because half of her fangirls don't even know who PJ Harvey is and are all omg she's so ~edgy~ with this photo LOOK AT IT.

That being said, I liked her a lot better when she was in the Dresden Dolls, she was less abrasive then. But I still hope they never get back together ever so World/Inferno can keep Brian as their drummer forever and ever and ever though. <3

I really don't think Palmer's trying to emulate PJ. no one can really do that. She obviously digs her, hence the shirt and cover and all, but any right-thinking person should. In any case, shit, obviously you're free to hate away, but Neil and Voltaire are both grown men and wouldn't be friends with anyone they didn't think was worth befriending.
