I wouldn't consider myself a sports fan but I literally cannot fathom why you would support a team that you don't have ties to. All the people swap around all the time. One is basically just like another except one is from Here and therefor that's the one I can go to. If you move or graduate it's fun to keep supporting your old teams, incorporating your old situation into your new persona. Maybe it's because local sports ball teams *suck* and half the fun is siiiiiighing about it with friends and acquaintances and strangers.

But I'm always happy when people like things and their games are sure to get broadcast so you can enjoy them to the fullest.

Before getting into watching sports I didn't understand how one chooses a team to support if they aren't somehow related to a place you've lived/connected to you somehow.

But for me, I got into soccer/football in a non-conventional way (never played because I'm terrible at sports, had a friend whose brothers would have games on the tv when I would visit her), and I really got into watching the English Premier League. I discovered the World Cup was happening and that was when I decided to commit my own time to watching football games at home alone. I got familiar with the international teams and certain players stood out to me. I followed the players into their respective league teams after the World Cup and based upon league games and special international events (Champions League, Euro Cup, etc) I really got into international football, became interested in my local teams, but by the time I finally considered myself a fan I'd already felt strong likings for certain teams based upon their styles of gameplay and the players which teams had and well they played together.

So I always love to hear unconventional reasons to how a person chose to support the teams they do.
