Is that not the software's intended purpose? Is there another controversy I'm not aware of?

Given how many students pay others to write their essays and how those paid people tend to cycle past essays, logging student essays in the system is probably the only way to catch them.

Students didn't like the fact that Turnitin was making a profit off their work, as without the essays being submitted the company wouldn't have a product to sell. There's no option to opt out, or at least there wasn't at the time, so if you didn't submit your work you'd fail, and at the time it was a fairly newly adopted software so older students hadn't been aware that this was going to happen until it was introduced halfway through their course.

It's one of those where it's an ick and move on. Like being filmed in a public area - I don't like it, but sometimes people are filming their vlogs and you end up in the background.
