Eh, as long as they aren't going out of their way to be dicks about it, or hypocritical, I don't mind. There are ETL pairings that I don't care for myself. Add to that that us Reylo fans are whipping boys for a lot of different groups and I can understand not wanting the association.

(Anonymous) 2022-12-05 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
ETL? Haven't seen that before.

Enemies to lovers.

You're not wrong.

You're not wrong about the dynamics being vaguely similar but if someone says they don't ship Reylo I'm generally going to take their word for it. It's probably a "specific denial" because Reylo specifically had serious hate.

(Anonymous) 2022-12-04 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I ship both ships, but it never occurred to me to compare them (and Reylo is not what I wanted Zutara to be), but I feel like the denial is less cause of the ships but in the "very popular ship that has a huge fandom with quite a few militant fans who ruin everything for everybody AND militant haters who also ruin everything for everybody" similarities and maybe some people are part of one group for one ship and part of the other for another. It happens.
I just know that I'm kind of annoyed with myself for shipping them (and also Harmione back in the day - the trifecta of shipping wank fandoms) because those fandoms are so exhausting... aka I stay away for the most part.

Wait...I thought Reylo was Star Wars? And this is not SW, it's...that thing with the earth/fire/water/air people?
I'm so confused.

You’re not missing anything. According to OP, people in one fandom specifically state they don’t ship something from a different fandom.

........well okay.
*shakes head*

The picture is Zutata (Zuko/Katara) from Avatar the Last Airbender. It's an enemies-to-lovers ship, as is Reylo.

Ah ha.

I wouldn’t have thought to compare them, because I associate Zutara ship wank with people arguing that pacifism is bad and Aang’s pacifism makes him too immature to deserve Katara. I guess the closest equivalent with Reylo is people arguing that Luke is an abuser, but that seems a lot smaller-scale. The Zutara wank reminds me more of people arguing about Undertale or Steven Universe.

(Anonymous) 2022-12-05 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
Well, if you (or others) are going around saying that Reylo is what they wanted Zutara to be, then its no wonder that they specifically saying that they hate Reylo.

(Anonymous) 2022-12-05 06:26 am (UTC)(link)
Lol yup, OP answered their own question. If people assume those who ship A probably ship B, and you don't ship A, of course you're going to say that along with saying you ship B.

It's like how if you say you ship a slash ship where either has a female love interest in canon, you have to then also say you like the female love interest as a character, or else it'll be assumed you hate her for being in the way.

(Anonymous) 2022-12-05 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
I just can’t believe we’re still talking about this after all these years lol!

Reylo and Zutara are similar, only one is canon and the other isn’t.

(Anonymous) 2022-12-05 02:30 am (UTC)(link)
I giggle when people are aggro over Zutara and Kataang. It's allowed me to get away with shipping Katara/Sokka practically unscathed. 🤣 🤣 🤣

(Anonymous) 2022-12-05 03:38 am (UTC)(link)
Do you ship everything that may have some overlapping tropes to one ship you like?

I'm sure there are fans who like the two, but I could see being irritated at people assuming fans are into both just because of superficial tropes (I've never watched the Star Wars trilogy so I don't know if Reylo really does share more than enemies to lovers).

(Anonymous) 2022-12-05 05:08 am (UTC)(link)
It does not. It super does not.

clarification

(Anonymous) 2022-12-05 02:33 pm (UTC)(link)
The secret is missing the word "unprompted". I'm not going up to people all "you ship zutara, then you must also like reylo" and then being confused when they say not. It's just that I've seen so many times someone saying they're zutaran and then proclaiming that they don't like reylo. It's just such a weird thing to bring up (and it's always zutarans with reylo, I've never seen it in any other ship configurations, including other way around) and also the whole "badass girl redeems tortured badboy" was such a thing in early zutara fanfics. I'm just confused at this.

Re: clarification

(Anonymous) 2022-12-05 07:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Huh. Well, considering the comments I'm seeing in other parts of this F!S with people who are talking about shipping Harry/Hermione, Zutara, and Reylo, and feeling like they weathered intense ship hate when trying to exist in fandom, because of that ... I guess you're hearing from people who are used to the three ships being associated.

Re: clarification

DA

I know one person has linked them here, but not really sure how Harry/Hermione fits in with the other too?

Like, Zutara and Reylo are controversial (stupidly imo, but this is the fandom landscape) because Zuko and Kylo are princes/ leaders of genocidal empires and the thinking goes shipping them legitimising their actions (despite the fact both were redeemed in canon). Harry and Hermione? Don't really fit in this mold.

AYRT

No, you're thinking that the connection is in the canons. What I was saying is that I've seen people relate those three in meta space where they're basically using those ships as shorthand for "the worst backlash I ever got from other fans was for these." The through-thread isn't in the ships, it's in the way they were attacked for supporting them.
