I relate, OP. I either catch the post when there are basically no comments, or I'm several hours late and everyone has moved on. I enjoy reading the comment threads but it's rarely worth me actually participating, which is a bummer.

I think it’s one of the downsides of having a mostly anonymous forum. I’d love to keep up conversations with people, but without notifications, I’d have to physically go back and check every comment thread manually.

And even if I become a known user, most other aren’t, so they wouldn’t keep up their side of the conversation.

It's also basically a collective action problem. There's no use anyone going back later to check comments, because no one comments, because no one will reply to or see their comments, because no one goes back to check comments later, and on and on in a loop.

It does turn into a bit of a compulsion to come back everyday to see if your secret has been posted. Because of that I end up being too active at times and then I go missing for months/years.

It is too bad, OP.
I work overnights on the weekend and so basically never see those posts at all. And inevitably, THOSE are the posts that have one or two or even three secrets that really interest me and I want to comment on but....TOO LATE!

Maybe secret posting should be every other day?

People would have longer to check back in, but that doesn't mean that they'd actually do it. And I worry that without the impetus of a new post every day there'd be fewer posts overall.

I also live in na different time zone. Secrets are usually posted mid morning for me. When it's not the weekend I tend to either check it at lunch or on a sneaky toilet phone break at work. Even so, sometimes I miss the main window and it sucks.

I've got to say, they've been plenty of times when I've been first to comment and got no response. Sometimes people just aren't interested in having a conversation about your point.

In contrast, when I've been in a particularly wanky or specific conversation, I've been able to get some back and forths that have lasted days.

(as you can see) is much less apparent than if you used a DreamWidth username.

It requires a relatively low barrier on non-anonymity.

Seconding this post, because you obviously meant the time stamp when you said “as you can see”. The time stamp wouldn’t get magically even more visible if you got a DW account.

Same here. I'm one of those anons who usually post around THIS time (It's 3PM here) and it's rare that someone reply to me.
Secrets are out in the middle of the night for me, but then I have access to F!S only in the afternoon so... sigh. Lonely anon is lonely.
Still. I usually end up lurking and reading almost all comments here, even of fandoms I know nothing about. I also come back to old posts so I can see if new comments are around. I've been around here for 10+ years now, always lurking.
So yeah, I'm probably going to see not all, but certainly MOST of the comments. :)
