I think the main horror was this small community, frankly. All this self-righteous Christians were a horror. I mean, their xenophobia and bigotry, their delusions basically killed the whole town. And the angel thing was just a supernatural element to start the plot.
I am not from Catholic country, but Beverly was a too familiar type. And argh.

But I do understand why someone would be triggered if they expected some classical vampire horror and not take on Christianity and all the shit it can bring. I still can't watch some great TV shows because I know they would hit too close to home.
