Re: Genshin, small female model meta

*I don't think it's from this week, but I had a long reply for a thread I felt too late for*

-We have, what, five playable little girls and no boys at all?

AYRT

According to the unofficial wiki, there’s also Dori, though I guess that makes her a very short adult. So, six girls and no boys in the smallest size category. With four chibi-bodied adults. I’m evenly split between feeling like it’s nice to have kid models and there should be boys and feeling like the way Genshin stylizes kids is across-the-board obnoxious.

I’ve gotten more accepting of Klee because she’s good in a fight. Visually, my first impression of her was that I was looking at a toy reindeer, and her constant levity didn’t help. Sayu is one of the adults in a kid’s body. She stopped growing, for no apparent reason, and the sleeping is her trying to fix that, but it obviously doesn’t. Interacting with her rubs me the wrong way anyway. Like, they wanted an utterly nonthreatening girl in a tanuki pyjama, who’s also half-ninja. Defensive skills only! Eff that.

I suspect the writers’ overall strategy is “throw a bunch of ‘cool’ traits at all the characters and hope some of them will get especially popular.” When they do that with the adults, it makes them seem like implausibly complicated over-achievers. When they do it with the kids, though, Westerners are like, why is this six-year-old showing her midriff and bartending? And this other six year old working with live ordnance? But aside from the business of character promotion, the chibis have to keep up. If their proudest accomplishment was using crayons, making them fight anything would seem bad. They’re playable characters, not gallery decorations. You’re supposed to be able to send any of them into battle and not be permanently traumatized if they die now and then. And that seems reasonable to me.

Anyway. I did pull for Nahida. I’m f2p, but the past two big areas were great for collecting primos and the archons tend to have some of the best skills in the game. She did not disappoint.

Comment was part of a Friday thread on a spoiler secret about Nahida, that sort of drifted into more general Feelings About the Chibis.
