The thing is, a lot of minorities are sick of having to DEBATE whether or not they deserve to have rights. The so-called "rational dialogue" doesn't just happen once and then it's over. It's people constantly thinking you're wrong about your own gender or religion or sexuality or whatever the fuck else, and every time someone finds out you're part of that minority, they think it's your JOB to educate them when you're just trying to live your life.

Also, the "having a conversation" thing DOES legitimize the topic. How would you like it if a reporter came up to you on the street and wanted to "have a rational dialogue" about whether or not you're a rapist? Would you want to date someone when there's a debate about whether or not they're a rapist? I wouldn't!

Why is Jon Stewart, a Jewish man and public figure, going on a talk show and being asked to give his opinion now being equated with regular people randomly being interrogated on the street or having to seriously consider dating a rapist? Why would either of these ridiculous scenarios even happen? How is this helping, aside from exposing your lack of logic?

And we can have dialogues about whether or not something is a good faith argument. If someone is trying to paint you as a bad person for no reason at all, of course you shut that down. And there is no debate over whether or not any human deserves to have basic human rights. There's no debating with Nazis. But I also don't see how it's helpful for anyone to assume that anyone asking questions is a Nazi.

The thing about educating people... though it might be exhausting, the good part is, once they're educated, they don't really have an excuse to be ignorant. People are lazy. Yeah, that's frustrating. And in a perfect world, they would all get off their asses and do their own research. They don't all do, or when they do, they could run into some misinformation. I'd rather Person B be better informed than not, or at least hear the side of Person A who has firsthand experience of the thing that that Person B might be misinformed or uninformed about.

Much better put point than the person above.
