(Anonymous) 2022-12-11 03:03 am (UTC)(link)because most people just do the same thing every year. Which is basically the appeal of holiday traditions.
The Youtuber Folding Ideas has a great video about defining "Christmas movies," and he said something that I found extremely poignant, which is that on a fundamental level, one of the core things that seasonal traditions are about is the performance and celebration of stability. They're about the belief (or at least the hope) that in another year's time, and a year after that and a year after that, you will be in a situation in which you are able to perform these same enjoyable and not strictly necessary traditions again--and they're about the celebration of the fact that you have been in a situation stable enough for you to forge those traditions in the first place.
