Re: Secrets you don't want to make...
(Anonymous) 2022-12-12 12:43 am (UTC)(link)I know a lot of modern cosplayers don't think this way and the goal is to look exactly like the character, or maybe a hotter version.
Mine is to have fun dressing up as a character I love after forcing my protesting body to follow my brain down hyperfixation lane for weeks or months, pulling all nighters, and probably injuring myself at least once.
The only things that make me sad about other cosplayers are the ones who get super judgy about not perfectly nailing a character's look, and people who buy their entire costumes and accessories ready made and don't make anything themselves.

(Anonymous) 2022-12-12 12:51 am (UTC)(link)Honestly this is why I hate cosplay these days. I would much rather see someone wearing a costume they cobbled together out of stuff they bought from the thrift store than some mass-produced junk they bought off Aliexpress because at least there's genuine heart and effort in the thrift store cosplay. It may not be technically perfect or even that great but who cares? They loved the character and the canon enough to want to try to make a costume themselves even if they aren't a skilled crafter, and to me that means a lot more than just clicking "Buy" on a webpage.
Re: Secrets you don't want to make...
(Anonymous) 2022-12-12 02:08 am (UTC)(link)I completely disagree. I just want to have fun cosplaying, even though me learning to sew has been disastrous enough that I learned I can’t do it. Because I have chronic pain from injuring my arms in an accident. I can’t use them for anything complex for more than an hour before I’m almost about to collapse from the pain. So what if I buy ready made costumes? It doesn’t mean I’m not cosplaying. There’s no rule except in competitions that it has to be hand made. After seeing AYRT talk about why OP is being overly judgmental about cosplayers, it was disappointing to see them and you be judgmental in a different way. Gatekeeping the cosplay community isn’t a great practice. I still have a great time picking out the accessories and shoes to match the costume. And putting on makeup, both when I’m cosplaying a character that wears it, and sometimes when I just want to get experimental. I’m still cosplaying. I don’t judge anyone else’s cosplay, it doesn’t matter how close to the characters they are. Or by if it looks like it was done by a seasoned sewer or someone who just “hobbled something together”. Because I think cosplay is cool no matter what. So again, why should it matter if mine, or other’s, costumes are bought ready made? Sometimes my friend makes the costumes for me, because he is able to sew, unlike me. Would I still be judged for not making it myself, or is it being hand stitched and not bought all it takes to not experience gatekeeping? I still love these characters, and I’m not any less of a fan or cosplayer for not being able to make my own costumes.
