You don't have to headcanon them the way they were written. I mean, if you were enjoying the pairing up until it turned out one of the two kicks puppies, you can still poke around for the part of the fandom that likes their chemistry but doesn't like that.

When Death Note was ongoing, there was a huge contingent that shipped the detective and the killer but modified it so the latter actually wasn't guilty of serial murder. If the problem just is that villains don't do it for you, you might not be alone.

Persona 5 fandom has a lot of fix fic where a particular villain reconsiders, because he’s not really evil, just angry. Some of them are pretty good! (I like https://archiveofourown.org/series/914673)

If it’s the villain I’m thinking of it works particularly well for him. I’m not terribly into villain/hero ships but that one I can see easily.

But I get OP. If a dynamic doesn’t work for someone it just doesn’t.
