While I see it and live by the "ship and let's ship" motto, as a Tony fan, I now have an automatic "nope" reaction to this ship (like the OP, I'm not an asshole about it.). And I'm always a bit wary of shippers until I can be sure they're not antis (not just of Tony but of other characters "getting in the way" of their OTP).

Strangely enough, I feel the same way about Stony shippers and Tony fans in general. I've had too many bad experiences with them not to be wary.

I love Stony for the dialogue potential and the difference in their backgrounds. Tony thinking Steve is a goody-goody relic at first and Steve thinking Tony is an arrogant dick with bewildering pop culture references.

Eh, different people are going to like different things. Not everyone is going to be into Steve and Tony's particular brand of antagonism, and constant, petty bickering and fighting doesn't say UST (let alone True Love) to everyone.

I've had too many run-ins with overly invested Tony fans who acted like it was some kind of crime to not think he was as firmly in the right at all times as they did, and not everyone found him the most sympathetic character. That particular contingent of Tony fans got very nasty and personally insulting towards anyone who didn't agree with them, or who just didn't center their fandom lives around him. Ditto with the shipping.

This. I don't know much about the comic versions, so the dynamics that I pay attention to are the MCU. And I like friendship to romance ships and don't like love/hate or bickering relationships. I just do. To each their own.

I have heard that. I'd probably ship the comic version if I was into the comics. But in the MCU, the dynamic doesn't work for me.

I still don’t think badly of Stucky shippers as a whole just because of that.

Those types of Tony fans ruined Tony for me. I used to BE a Tony fan, and I very much wanted to discuss disappointing trends in his MCU characterization with other fans, but to this (very loud) group, there was nothing to discuss, he was still in the right and worthy of praise. So eventually I just....left.

That didn’t ruin Tony for me, I just stopped trying to engage with the fandom for nuanced discussions.

I mean, they're allow to not see things the same way you do. It doesn't make them wrong (or right). It's just a matter of opinion. That doesn't mean they didn't see other nuances of the character, that they weren't willing to critisice other aspects of the character, or that they "ruin" the character for you because you didn't find fans who agree with your view of the character. I only point out the obvious because you sound a bit too judgey for my taste.

I suspect that the problem is more that the Tony fans who ruined him for the person you replied to acted like assholes whenever anyone said anything they didn't like. That can turn people off of characters pretty fast.

I’m a Tony fan who prefers Stony, because I started with the comics. I know Steve and Tony don’t have the deep connection of friendship in the MCU as they do in the comics, which always makes that line in Civil War a bit funny to me(“He’s my friend” “So was I, Steve”, like, were you actually? You were friendly coworkers at best.). And I also know the characterization in general is different between the comics and movies. But I still just can’t like Stucky more than Stony because of my history with the characters. But I also don’t really participate in the MCU fandom beyond reading fic. So most of the Team Iron Man vs. Team Cap and Team Stucky vs. Stony fighting I see is here, luckily. Except for fic that specifically has Team Cap or Team Iron Man in the tags. Which I exclude, as well as pretty much any anti-Steve or anti-Tony tags I can find. Because I don’t care about that. And I don’t want to read bashing for either character in a fic if I can manage.
