I was in high school around this time in a school district full of well off but not super-rich families in the suburbs of a mid-sized city. IIRC, one girl drove an actual Cadillac - not brand new, but not ancient, with vanity license plates that had her name on them. (I probably don't need to tell you she was an awful person.) Another drove a little red Miata. I'd say that older BMW or Mecedes-Benz was not out of the question - think "my dad got a brand new Benz and gave me his older one" situation.
