like, the thing is, (a) the reason pagans had holidays in midwinter is because it's just sort of a natural time to have a holiday, so it makes sense that Christians would also have a holiday there for the same reasons (b) there's an obvious symbolism with having Jesus born at the time of the winter solstice (c) Christians traditionally believed that the Annunciation took place on the spring equinox for similar symbolic reasons, and obviously the math there works out for a Christmas birthday
