There's a tension between people believing that different cultures are very distinct, and that there isn't a universal human experience, while also believing that depicting cultural archetypes is offensive, due to it erasing parts of the universal human experience.

Also, Asian Americans have a very different perspective on things from Asians. Asians might not find a portrayal like this to be offensive, but Asian Americans are influenced by their experience of living in America, and of (whether they consciously realize it or not) adopting certain American views and values.
