We are just going back to the old days where media was gone if you didn't watch it in theaters or live.

And during those days, on the rare occasion one of those movies came on TV (or during the entire run of a favorite TV show), I made sure to record it on VHS. Which I guess would these days be considered PIRACY, OH NOES.

So uh, yeah, I feel the OP there.

Actually not! "Format shifting" was generally legal in most countries until the internet came along - recording something you owned or off the radio or off TV was legal for personal use. Then came the internet, and before downloading was included in format shifting, big corporations (and Metallica) made sure that it wouldn't be.

Huh. I must have lived through that, but since I didn't get on the internet until the very late 90s (and with a 14.4 modem, so I was definitely not downloading ANYTHING I didn't have to) I guess I was unaware of that specification.

I do vaguely remember Metallica vs... Napster I think it was? Sigh.
