I was never that into FOB, and haven't listened to a full album, but I think this happens to a lot of artists. I think it's a matter of changing contexts, when an album is first released it's inevitably compared to what came before, so when there's a considerable shift in sound, it doesn't get judged on the quality of what it is trying to do, but it's judged as if it was meant to be what they were doing before.
