I feel like I’m in an awkward spot, because I like people bravely fighting against near-impossible odds. It often collapses into either “the odds were impossible after all” or “the threat is dealt with way too easily.”

Same. I just can't get invested in something if there are no real stakes involved - I need to believe that there's a real, significant threat that the characters are going up against.
