(Anonymous) 2022-12-21 02:12 am (UTC)(link)I love the medieval era, and you have no idea how much I fucking hate the "misogynistic shit-ridden era where everyone was mean and cruel to eachother" trope, and how it is just as mistaken as the goddamn idealistic depictions of the past. People are fundamentally people.
Realism is a sauce you get for a part of your story, based on a specific element, that you TRY to make it fit into a whole. If you TRY not make a 110% """realistic""" story, not only will you fail miserably, you will make a terrible story.

(Anonymous) 2022-12-22 06:36 pm (UTC)(link)My gripe is more against bad writers that mistake cruelty and grimdark for realism. OP is very much on point for putting "realism" under quotation marks, and I wholeheartedly agree with them.
If anything, I think audiences are victims when they are forced to think the same as bad writers under that school of philosophy.
