It's so fucking obnoxious how so many people think "realistic" means "depressing/pessimistic/dark." My dudes, happiness and wonder also happen in real life, making them *gasp* realistic!

Exactly! Real life is not just those elements, but can be happiness, dumb luck, and most shockingly to morons that confuse realism with wanton (and incredibly stupid) cruelty, boring and practical actions and even traditions.

I love the medieval era, and you have no idea how much I fucking hate the "misogynistic shit-ridden era where everyone was mean and cruel to eachother" trope, and how it is just as mistaken as the goddamn idealistic depictions of the past. People are fundamentally people.

Realism is a sauce you get for a part of your story, based on a specific element, that you TRY to make it fit into a whole. If you TRY not make a 110% """realistic""" story, not only will you fail miserably, you will make a terrible story.

Hopefully you’re not calling OP a moron. Because they said nothing to deserve being insulted. I just can’t tell if you’re anger is being directed at OP for saying “realism” when they were clearly talking about “gritty realism” made by bad writers, or the bad writers who mistake cruelty and grimdark for realism.

I did not intend to insult them! I apologize!

My gripe is more against bad writers that mistake cruelty and grimdark for realism. OP is very much on point for putting "realism" under quotation marks, and I wholeheartedly agree with them.

If anything, I think audiences are victims when they are forced to think the same as bad writers under that school of philosophy.
