Yyyyep.

I mean possibly my two favorite video games are Vagrant Story and Legend of Mana, and if those are not tonal opposites...

And they are both amazing at what they do with that tone, which is why they're my favorites despite having basically nothing in common! (Except being on the PS1 and item creation systems with a steep learning curve, I guess.)

Hell, speaking of Ivalice, it is perfectly possible to love both FFT and FFTA which couldn't possibly skew more opposite tonally. They're games, you don't always want the same thing.

Hah, and that makes me think of the Suikoden games.

I mean you have issues like coups and genocide and civil war and existential crises from artificially-created beings, and quite frequently early on in the games you see innocent children die, and permanent death for party members is a possibility...

But also you have like a duck wearing a combat helmet as part of your party for much of one game, and you can have intense cooking contests in your castle's kitchen, and if you find and adopt all 5 dogs around the map, you can stage an all-dog production of Romeo and Juliet.
