THIS. 99.9% of the time it really all boils down to "I'm mad that MY ship isn't canon."

(Anonymous) 2022-12-21 05:13 am (UTC)(link)
No, that's something different and is not at all what the secret is about. First of all, there is no clearly cut line between "I make this character gay because I'm gay and I like and relate to them" and "I make this character gay because muh ship" and never the twain shall meet. People tend to gravitate towards shipping characters they also like and relate to.

But you think nobody ever gets told not to make characters gay and not put them in gay ships by people who just don't want their fave to even be headcanoned gay ever? And nobody ever masks that homophobia by saying "Look, I don't hate gay people, I'm just conceeeeeerrrrned that you're ignoring canon gay characters! You should write about them (and keep your gay cooties with them and away from the characters *I* project onto)". Like damn I wish I knew what rock you live under so I could join you lmao

DA

No, I haven't. I really haven't.

I guess I move in less Discourse-ridden circles...

Uh, I'm actually gay and I get annoyed when the canon gay ships are ignored in favor of fanon gay ships because I usually ship the canon ships. It's rare enough to get a canon gay ship in things so it's even more annoying when we actually do get a canon gay ship and then people proceed to ignore it.

My theory is that canon gay ships are ignored in fandom is because there’s nothing to fix and they already got together. As a straight ship that went canon, Mulder and Scully now bore me.

I like first time and pining fic, not established relationships sry

All canon ships tend to get ignored unless they have plot-related conflict tied into them, and most gay ships don't have that because they're just there to be representation and not actually have any plot focus.

Not “all” canon ships get ignored unless they have plot related conflict tied into them. This is just not how it is in a large amount of fandoms.

And also, it’s not true that “most” gay ships are just there to be representation, or that “most” don’t have plot related conflict ties into them.

The second paragraph is very true in everything I like. If you can give me some recs for canon gay ships that aren't boring (always happy with everything about each other once they're together), I'd love to hear them.

For starters, Luz and Amity from The Owl House, Catra and Adora from She-Ra: Princesses of Power, Clark and Lexa from The 100, Willow and Tara from Buffy, Marceline and Princess Bubblegum from Adventure Time, Olivia and Yunnan from Amphibia, Laura and Carmilla from the Carmilla web series, Alec and Magnus from Shadowhunters, Ruby and Sapphire from Steven Universe. And Vi and Caitlyn from League of Legends/Arcane also count in some ways. I don’t like every single one of these ships, but they’re not just representation. And they all have plot related conflicts, they’re not just happy with everything about each other once they get together, they have arguments and/or disagreements.

“People tend to gravitate towards shipping characters they also like and relate to.”

As far as people gravitating towards shipping characters they like? Well yeah, of course.

But people tending to gravitate towards characters they relate to? That’s not remotely true for everyone. There’s a big multitude of reasons as to why people like ships, and they’re all just as valid as relating to characters or ships.
