I think you've misread my argument because you've just said exactly what I've been saying here. I wasn't saying that chapter-specific warning are bad and tags are enough. I'm saying that tags are already a "spoiler" so putting chapter-specific warnings at the top isn't going to ruin your story. On the contrary, it makes it easier to enjoy the story if you know up front which chapter you need to be careful reading instead of having to scroll all the way down to see if this is the bad chapter or not. Or, in the fics I'm talking about, you won't see the warnings until you've already read that part.

DA - it won’t ruin the story for you. It wouldn’t ruin the story for me, either. But if, for example, the warning is for a main character death, having “this is the chapter where main character DIES!” unavoidably plastered to the top of the chapter absolutely will ruin the story for some people. It’s not that much of an ask from the author to scroll down if you need more specific warnings. If it is too much of an ask for you, you probably weren’t enjoying the story that much anyway.

You don't have to write out long detailed warnings, you know. Simple cw:death serves perfectly well to obscure whether it's about main, side or extra character while allowing the reader to mentally prepare without forcing them to go through unnecessary hoops.

It does matter to some people whether the death is a character they actually care about, a random OC, or a rabbit. Other people don’t want to read about death at all. You don’t have to read any story that makes you go through the indignity of spending two seconds to go to the bottom of the page and read the detailed warning, but quit pretending that there’s no reason to format it that way. You have a preference. It is your preference. If the person whose story you’re reading for free has a different preference either deal with it or read something else for free. If you’re commissioning the fic, you can demand they jump through whatever stylistic hoops make you happy.
