ooh, fair enough about benny, that was peak 50s WWI "why are these army men so close to each other but no women" homosocial relationship. but if you're talking about the dog familiar episode, I don't think we need to say that's a metaphor for anything, and my sanity would prefer it that way.

Yeah - I remember that there were a bunch of little things that made me think this when I was watching but that was a month or so ago, so I don't quite remember what they all were now. Maybe I was thinking of something else, who knows.

But the Benny one was by far the biggest, because boy gee whiz, it's a lot more difficult to come up with a heterosexual explanation for that one. And also - they gave Dean that storyline to fill the space between seasons while at the same time giving an explicitly het romantic storyline to Sam as the parallel storyline to serve the same function.

yeah, season 8 I feel like all the dean m/m ships got a little something something. dean/benny for those who didn't like either dean/cas or dean/sam, dean/cas got a lost and found storyline (albeit with benny as a rebound), and dean/sam got a shitton of absolute jealousy lmao. it still extremely subtextual imo, but there's significantly more that season than any other besides maybe 5 and that tiny bit where Dean is demoning it up with Crowley in season 10.

The Dean/Benny ship hit me like a ton of bricks. Never looked back at Dean/Cas after that, lol, and then ended up sorely disappointed. XD
