I have only ever done this on self-help books or textbooks. Mostly self-help, tbh, because I often need to refer back to ideas or thoughts.

Everything else, nope. The tabs would distract me. If something is that important, I leave a bookmark there, but that’s it.

I think they do it on booktok for the optics, tbh. It’s like people sorting their books by color. I would never do that, because it would mix genres, break up series, and make no sense, but they do it for the aesthetics.
