Re: Instant media turn-offs

Casual ignorance of the human condition of people who aren't like the writer. Like male writers saying in their story that a $30 bra is expensive and women always wear the matching panties.

Tangentially related, but that reminds me of how in every single book I've ever read with a female protagonist, she never wears makeup, which is a bit odd to me. I don't know if the people I know are unusual or what, but every woman I know wears makeup at least sometimes, so it's weird to me that I don't remember having ever read even one book that mentioned the female MC wearing makeup.

It's me. I'm the person who never wears makeup. I'm probably missing out on a lot of social clues about this, but I will probably never know because I'm autistic.

Might be a genre thing? With noir and classic pulp, every title I've read with a female protagonist is gussied up. YA and fantasy seem fond of protagonists without makeup. Mainstream comics seem to favor women with at least lipstick and mascara (glossy lips/long eyelashes) but it's common in independent publishing to find women without.

Its usually writers (both male and female) trying to make their faves seem both "naturally so beautiful they don't need that pesky makeup" and "not vain and superficial like those ither girls".

Maybe? Most of what I read with female protagonists are mystery/suspense type things, and it's always the "good", morally pure female main character who never wears makeup, while the "bad"/immoral/disreputable/whatever minor/background characters (sex workers, "sluts" who try to steal the main woman's boyfriend/husband, etc.) are described as wearing "too much" makeup. Idk, it just sometimes comes off a bit NLTOG-y/judgmental to me.

Makeup for people who wear it regularly is a morning routine, so you're probably supposed to assume she's wearing it, like how you're supposed to assume she brushes her teeth and hair regularly without it being brought up.

Sorry, I didn't word it right. I'm talking about specifically mentioning that she doesn't wear makeup rather than just not mentioning it at all.

Ahhh, I guess it's "she is so beautiful she needs no makeup" thing. Annoying, I feel you

OK, I am interested in those books as someone who haven't been wearing make up past occasional concealer for at least three years.
I've only seen "she is natural beauty who needs no make up" thing, but it's written by men who think that full-on warrior mask is women's natural face

I think it’s a genre thing. Most books I read at least have the female protagonist putting on lipstick and mascara if they’re going out. They don’t go through a whole routine, but since that’s up there with “nightly skin care regimen” and “dental hygiene” for things I don’t need to read about, I’m cool with it.

I haven't worn makeup for decades. Will wear it when men do so as a matter of course (likewise high heels) but honestly it just feels slimy to me.)

I did get my face painted as a lion a few years ago, but that's totally different, OK?

As a woman who doesn't wear bras, are you telling me $30 is cheap for a bra? Holy shit.

Re: Instant media turn-offs

(Anonymous) 2022-12-28 05:09 am (UTC)(link)

If the bra in question is custom fit, $30 is very cheap. One can buy something off the rack at, say, Walmart for cheaper.

Gods, I am envious.
Yes, if it's fit nice bra, it's really cheap. Also everyone with bigger tits don't have luxery of buying cheap bras.
(I was ready to strangle my friend who casually asked why anyone would want to buy bra that's more expensive than 20$)

Yeah, once you get above DD cups especially. I'm at, idk, 36FF and while I've paid less than $30 for some of my bras, it's because I get them online and on sale; MSR is usually $60-$100, especially for anything that is comfy and supportive in shades other than white or beige.

Re: Instant media turn-offs

(Anonymous) 2022-12-28 09:23 am (UTC)(link)
I hate white and beige SO MUCH. Especially this beige that is supposed to be (white) human flesh colour and it never is. It's dead doll colour.

Re: Instant media turn-offs

Yeah, $30 is pretty cheap. You can probably snag something at Victoria's Secret for around that price on sale, but that'd be significantly discounted from full price.

I'm willing to bet you could get something from Walmart for $30 or cheaper, but, I mean, it's Walmart.

If your band size is smaller than 32 or bigger than 38, or if your cup size is larger than DD, then you'll probably have to go with a more specialty brand, and those tend to be pricier. I'm in Canada, and here specialty bras tend to range from around $70 full price to maybe $140 full price (not counting luxury brands which are a whole thing of their own).

haha, women only wear matching panties in catalogs, not real life!
