Instant media turn-offs

What things will have you instantly closing that book, turning off the tv, shutting off the game, walking out of the theater?

Inspired by my mom trying to convince me to start watching 1883 with her, where two of the main characters are a former confederate soldier and former confederate nurse. No. Do not try to make people who were confederates sympathetic. Unless they feel guilty about it and wish they hadn't.

The fact that MAGAs love the Yellowstone-verse is a big turn off period.

Oooo, I did not know that. I know very little about the universe. None of us have seen Yellowstone. She watched the first two episodes of the new Harrison Ford one, got interested, started watching the 1883 one. I wasn't really paying attention at all, except that I caught the confederate thing.

OK, I'm definitely not watching that now.

Anything that glorifies excessive wealth. I've always hated reality television that explored rich people's lives but I'm growing to hate it in fiction too.

If it is cop-focused, or described (in any variation) as a gritty new take, or a realistic reinterpretation, of a previous property. And serialised. Fuck any of that. I will drop any of those in a heartbeat. It just means it is going to be boring and miserable with everyone acting like their worst selves.

Also, if it is a book, then if it is in first person or present tense. Because, then it is just juvenile bollocks.

"Celebrity" anything, unless they have actual genuine A-listers instead of over acting "reality" "stars".

I don't mind if they have smaller character actor types on but I hate when all the 'celebrities' are terrible reality TV stars and a bunch of overhyped TikTok people with no actual talent.

Cringe humor like in The Office. Can't do it. I die inside.

I don't think I could ever walk out a cinema since its too expensive and I'd rather suffer for my money's worth, but if I didn't have that ideology then I would have happily walked out during The Happytime Murders. I don't know what I was expecting but I do love puppets and it sounded promising enough - but because they needed to prove it was a puppet 'for adults', there were some of the worst awkward sex jokes slapped in there for the sake of being there. Plus the story line was a bit shit towards the end, which is a shame because I think if done right it could have pulled off something like a darker version of Who Framed Roger Rabbit.

Its been forever since I last looked it up, but I believed that it originally had a very different storyline that suffered a fate similar to Cool World where the premise was changed in the process of making the movie (Although I did like Cool World, the original idea for that movie where the main protagonist was half human half cartoon sounded much more interesting).

Oops I misread the question.
Although I suppose I still stand by badly written unnecessary sex jokes in a movie/show that would be my instant quit. Also poop jokes that go on for too long (which I would not have thought was a frequent thing, but alas).

I'd actually like to see a Roger Rabbit type mix of live action and animation in a horror movie context if it was done right.

Toilet humour. The occasional isolated fart or poop joke might be mildly amusing, but media that repeatedly leans into it is just annoying, uncomfortable and not funny in the slightest.

+100000

Like you I can find the occasional fart-joke funny, but when it's constant... like I'm usually very YMMV about media, what others like I might not and that's fine yada yada, but I legit don't get how toilet humor is meant to be funny to anyone older than 6.

I had a comic from the library, and was eager to start reading it. However, I have tokophobia in non-porn contexts (but I also seek out pregnancy/lactation porn, make of that what you will). So when the comic opened up on a naked person's body, I just put down the book I had been looking forward to reading, and never read it at all throughout the rest of the book rental period.

I also fucking hate it when directors put pregnant characters in horror and make it a conflict in the story that a person in labor screams. It seems that a pregnant person in a horror movie is there for nothing else.

Additionally I hate it when an otherwise good story I was into decides to put a downer ending. There are a lot of stories I want to recommend to my friends, but the endings soured me on the whole experience. I will put up with whatever an author wants to portray, but I need that victory for the characters!

Rape as drama. There are certain contexts/handlings that I'm okay with, like if it's adequately warned for and/or treated with appropriate weight, for instance; I was shockingly able to watch the early seasons of Handmaid's Tale, for instance. But a show throwing in a rape plot solely for the drama and then adding insult by playing up OTHER people's reactions to it than the actual victim? Fuck that.

I don't even have a particular trigger for it, but when it happens, I'm out completely.

Casual ignorance of the human condition of people who aren't like the writer. Like male writers saying in their story that a $30 bra is expensive and women always wear the matching panties.

Every comic that does at least word or phrase per text bubble like this. It throws off the way the voices sound in my head and makes it impossible to focus on what they're saying. I've tried so many times, and there are lots of comics I'd love to read, but I just mentally cannot.

I do know the history of why it's done like that, and it doesn't help.

I totally agree with you the confederate thing! I didn't know that about that show, but the only people I know of who like it are right wingers, so that makes sense.

The most recent thing for me was when one of the female main characters in a book was making fun of a male character for not immediately wanting to have sex with her and questioning his manhood and stuff. I don't know if it's because I'm ace (although not a guy) but it just really rubbed me the wrong way, and I put the book down at that point and didn't go back to it.

The other one I can think of, there was a show where one of the characters was gay and estranged from his family because they kicked him out for being gay, and he had to live on the street at 14, and all the other characters were constantly guilting him about it and pressuring him to reach out to them because ~family~ and when he finally gave in and met up with his parents and apologized to them for not speaking to them, I gave up on the show. It pissed me off so fucking much.

-I am dropping everything that does love triangles. Yes, I drop stuff A LOT.
-I'm done with dirty gray medieval people trope.
-There is a chance that I will stop watching/reading/listening /whatever if all the main characters are teenagers or young adults.
-Racist caricatures instead of actual characters.
-There is a chance that I am dropping something if it has obnoxious sountrack. (I am still bitter at whoever was responsible for the Old Guard soundtrack, it was atrocious)

I don't pick up anything centered around young protagonists. Even teen-aged protagonists. I don't have any comments as to the quality or subject matter (although I think a lot of problems are solved by setting HS stories in college, that's another rant) I'm just fundamentally uninterested in all of these problems that don't matter to me.
