I thought ayrt meant that people would be more critical of him if he wasn't a conventionally attractive white-looking dude?

That anon is saying literally the opposite of what you're saying here, nonny

AYRT here. Nope, I meant that they'd be more forgiving if he wasn't. I'm sure there are people in the fandom who would love to be more critical of the other characters, because everyone in that series, not just Jayce, is flawed due to some degree of stupidity or self-interest. But criticism of any other character is squashed because you can't criticize the character flaws of a lesbian, a black woman, a mentally ill girl, or a sick and disabled man without your motives being sus. Jayce is free for fans to unabashedly pour hate on because he's just about the only character who is privileged in every way.

Ah, alright. Running on very little sleep so brain just smooshed words together while reading. Thanks for the clarification.

Not the same anon and also I haven't really interacted with the Arcane fandom in any way so I have no clue if what you're saying is right, but personally what makes Jayce a profoundly irritating character aren't his flaws as a person (I don't dislike his arrogance nor his naivete when it comes to the reality of war, as an example) but the fact that he seems to have no spine at all? literally all he does he does because someone whispered in his ear and like... Sure, that can also be a character flaw, but he changes his mind on so many things, so many times, to me it stopped being a flaw and just became obnoxious and made me eye-roll hard whenever he was on screen.

Again idk if what you're saying about people in the fandom non wanting to criticize other characters because of their race/sexuality is true, but personally my main issue is that all the other characters act in a way that is congruous with their attitude/past and, yes, they are flawed, but they are flawed in a way that makes sense, and thus never threw me out of the plot the way Jayce did, multiple times. Like, the writing of Arcane is very much hinged on having characters who are complex, flawed and morally gray, but of all of them only Jayce was the one that to me felt less like his own person and more like a plot device on leg; that is what makes me dislike him, at the end of the day.
