I've only heard about Dream and mincraft drama in passing from looking through the Markiplier tag - but yeah, even without looking for anything specific I can tell there's a lot going on in there. I hope you find a good space to enjoy MCYT soon OP!

I'm not into the fandom for any SMPs in any capacity, although I do watch a bunch of youtubers on the Hermicraft server because they are just fun and chill; even as on the peripheral as I am in the whole chasm that is the fandom of minecraft SMPs some of the Dream drama still reached my ears and, my god, it made me want to just stay well away from anything even remotely concerning that dude for the rest of my life.

I don't even care that much about Dream himself one way or another, but I was in the fandom for the server for a while and I've never encountered such a toxic fandom environment in my years of fandom. It was nuts and made me leave the fandom and never want to look back.

It's probably because the fandom tends to skewer on the younger side... By my experience, fandoms with a majority of younger audience tend to be toxic as fuuuuuuuuuuuck

can someone explain this Dream SMP thing in simple language someone who has only watched their nephews play minecraft on the switch can understand? I know there was a big deal but I don't know what it was and every summary is like 300k words...

SMP stands for Survival Multiplayer, so a non-creative-mode server with multiple players.

The Dream SMP was started by the streamer Dream (or DreamWasTaken) and went from being a server for him and his friends, to a server for him to hype other streamers by inviting them on, to a story-based roleplay server after he invited some theatrical-minded streamers. It became EXTREMELY popular at this time (boosted by the pandemic leaving a lot of people stuck inside and able to watch hours of content)
