I haven't read either of these, so no opinions there. But I do find it really interesting how people can sincerely take such different things from stories, and I think nowhere is that more prevalent than within the horror genre.

I have a friend who just cannot do horror, at all, period. We watched Stranger Things S1 together, and she ended up loving it, but she said she had nightmares for several nights after the first couple of episodes. Whereas IMO S1 is very light horror. Recently she wanted to watch S4 with me, but I'd see the first couple of episodes already on my own and I was like, "Okay, but I think you should know it is considerably more horrific than the show has ever been before," because 4x01 actually freaked me out enough that I had a bit of a hard time sleeping afterwards. But when we watched it she didn't find it scary at all.

One thing I've noticed--as someone who is very sensitive to body horror, is that some people just don't respond to it at all. Like it just bounces off of them. Often they don't even really register it as horror at all.

Horror is definitely weird that way. I had a friend who was far less easily disturbed than I am warn me that I probably shouldn't watch Elfen Lied. It was disturbing but I enjoyed it. But there are less "horrific" things that I don't want anything to do with.

Yeah, I'm one of those people. I remember figuring out that my idea of horror didn't match most other people's when watching the Hannibal movie. No problem cutting a guy open and then throwing him over a balcony to hang and have his guts splash out. I ate popcorn through it. But when he drugged Clarice up, I was hiding behind my hands and trying to block the sound out. THAT viscerally horrified me.
