Er...

Aren't those from 2021, though? Word of Honor certainly is.

Also at least two of those are a bit shit. Good at engaging their target audience, which is a big plus, but also slightly cringy production values.

Shrug. C-dramas have a lot of air-time to get through I guess.

Word of Honor was campy fun and the leads are 30 now I believe

there's a side couple who are teens but they're meant to be comedic

(Anonymous) 2023-01-03 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
They did have extremely flawless skin, though.

"Faces are all the same"
Careful, your racism is showing.

If the casting pool has been as homogenized as Hollywood's has, then they are fine.

(Anonymous) 2023-01-03 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
LBR there's certainly a type of actor with a certain type of look that is chosen to be the lead for most dramas i.e. extremely conventional pretty boys. Same with generic kpop/kdrama jpop/jdrama stars, both male and female. To get to people with non-conventional, or even remotely realistic-to-the-average looks you have to look elsewhere other than mainstream dramas, no matter the culture.

It's not any more racist to point that out than to point out that Hallmark movies all have the exact same type of interchangeable white guy too. All those casting choices are done on purpose.

This.

This

I don't watch any cdramas or anything but I absolutely have this problem with western media and I'm white. One reason I like old British period films is all the people look different and like people rather than models.

Yep. Pretty sure this doesn't make anyone racist to point out.

HA, omg. Funny, though; of everyone in that picture, I really only see Matt Bomer as the 'good looking' one, though I can't figure out just why that is....

(Anonymous) 2023-01-03 06:03 am (UTC)(link)
Oh god this.
A lot of (western) media make me think I am faceblind and I am not.

Also Chinese dramas not only use the same type of actors but they airbrush them to hell. Of course actors look the same, they are not allowed to have features.

(Anonymous) 2023-01-03 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
I have this problem with youngish white man with dark hair in US TV!

(Anonymous) 2023-01-03 09:02 am (UTC)(link)
yeah wtf none of the actors in this secret look the same

the only thing I can think of is maybe the hair + body proportions? but still it's sus

(Anonymous) 2023-01-03 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
There's certainly a way C-dramas style their male leads to hit a certain type of samey-homegeny applicable to the genre(I prefer the costume dramas because I like the long flowy hair on everyone, but that's purely YMMV on my end) but they don't look 15 and it's not as if this is unique to Chinese entertainment, there's a lot of entertainment industries that have a beauty standard that permiates the industry that most stars need to adhere to in order to get work.

Honestly the main thing I dislike about the obsesseion with the actors being so thin in C-drama-land is that it can't be healthy and it just makes me want to feed them. :(

(Anonymous) 2023-01-03 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
I'm looking forward to Tibetan Sea Flower. One of the leads, Chen Minghao, has the most interesting face ever...

(Anonymous) 2023-01-03 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
"look 15"

Spoken like someone who watches lots of dramas with Dawson Casting and hasn't seen anyone under 25 in real life.

(Anonymous) 2023-01-03 08:33 am (UTC)(link)
I remember reccing a Taiwanese BL drama (Crossing the Line) and somebody whined the actors looked like babies. Which was really WTF to me, because no, they were very obviously adults playing high schoolers - Zach Lu was 30 years old at the time!

(Anonymous) 2023-01-03 08:39 am (UTC)(link)
I just googled this and the one with the glasses looks legit like a teenager to me but they don't look THAT young, gosh!

(Anonymous) 2023-01-03 10:19 am (UTC)(link)
LOL right? The woman in the bottom left image looks a lot like my coworker, who is 26. I could see her being maybe a bit younger than that but there's no way she looks 15.
